This is a Permanent, Full Time vacancy that will close in {x} days at {xx:xx} BST.

Fieldfisher is an incredibly exciting place to be right now. With 20% firm growth in the last financial year, we are going places, and want to hire top-calibre lawyers to join us on our journey.  Notably as we expand our Silicon Valley offering with more UK/UK/global employment capability.

Fieldfisher's Silicon Valley Office (SVO) is unique, it doesn't practice US law but strictly UK and EU law and helps to bridge the gap for US businesses as they expand and do business in the UK and Europe.  By bringing UK and EU expertise to the Pacific time zone, our team supports a range of tech, online and innovative digital clients as they grow and trade in Europe.  Often advising directly from Silicon Valley and sometimes coordinating advice from around Fieldfisher in Europe and beyond.

Our Employment, Pension and Immigration team is made up of 25 lawyers but currently we've limited on-the-ground expertise in Silicon Valley.  We would like to change that and have a permanent role within the Silicon Valley team. We're looking to hire a senior employment lawyer to help build client relationships and support clients as they hire, fire and manage employment and HR issues in the UK and Europe.

We have a collaborative and collegiate culture and the successful candidate will work closely and be a part of our global teams as well as have the support of our pensions, tax (stock options) and HR consultants.

We act for a broad spectrum of employers including international corporates across a variety of sectors with a particular focus on fintech, cloud and technology companies.

Responsibilities

  • Advising US clients on technical and complex EU and UK employment matters
  • Proactively manage own matters – including, extensive cross-border advice and project management
  • Lead on larger transactions and cases
  • Communicate effectively with clients
  • Contribute towards business development strategy of the team by preparing briefing papers, attending and presenting at client seminars and developing their own contacts within organisations.
  • Advising US clients on the inter-relationship and conflicts between US employment law and EU and UK employment law

Key Skills & Experience

The successful candidate ideally has a UK passport or already has the ability to work in the US.

All our team must have the ability to work and practice in California via either CalBar or CalBar Foreign Legal Consultant status.  Strong candidates will demonstrate a pathway to either of these options.

  • Personable, self-starter who will fit well into our small and ambitious Silicon Valley Team
  • Experienced qualified lawyer from a top rated UK Employment practice and with a keen interest in non-contentious matters.
  • Experience advising US headquartered technology on a range of Employment matters, from corporate employment practices and policies to risk and management oversight.
  • Demonstrable experience with project management and supporting multi-jurisdictional employee projects
  • Experience and awareness of regulatory changes affecting tech and cloud enterprises
  • Privacy insight and experience is highly desirable (not essential)
  • Strong academic record and intellectual capability.
  • Good legal skills including attention to detail in drafting and a genuine interest in the needs of the client.
  • An ability to think laterally and identify related issues and problems.
  • A confident and professional manner.

Note: the successful candidate may work within our UK teams and offices for a period in preparation for transfer to the US.  The intent is for them to work full-time and on a permanent basis in Silicon Valley.

"It is great being in a firm which "gets" cross-office working – to feel properly part of a national team and to work with colleagues in other specialisms who are unconstrained by geography."

"I consider Fieldfisher to be a progressive firm with an understanding of social values. I'm pleased that staff is able to have input in the firm's direction and purpose as well as help to shape wider society. I'm encouraged to perform by being able to develop in a natural way, whilst being supported at every step.

Fieldfisher has managed to nurture a really positive and friendly culture. If they have drive and ambition, I would encourage anybody looking for a role here to grab the opportunity."

"Since joining Fieldfisher in 2016, I have progressed from an entry-level secretarial role to an experienced executive assistant. This was made possible by a supportive and inclusive working environment that allows staff to progress at a pace that is best suited to them which in turn makes for well-rounded, home-grown talent.

The firm strikes a great balance between providing the foundations for success and autonomy of your own growth and development. An insight I would give to potential applicants is that Fieldfisher offers the opportunity for a career and a sense of belonging to a community and not just a job."
